1/18/2024 0 Comments Poe 2 deadfireThe first game had this great book about the creatures of the Deadfire and throughout the game I was expecting some kind of battle against at least one of them, nope, all that setup in the first game was just nulled. The added lore is minimal, exemplified by a small thing as the lack of new books to read. I also didn't feel as much about the people and struggles of the Deadfire as I did for the Dyrwood. Biggest fault of the story is, none of the factions are likeable, I understand that white and black morality is boring in games and everything being grey is a lot more intetersting, but Obsidian took that to an extreme here, every faction has **a lot** of faults and siding with any of them would be morally dark in my opinion. The main dilemma is pretty strong ||agreeing with Eothas' goal and ideals or not|| but everything surrounding it feels underwhelming. The main story didn't feel as compelling as the one in the original. The soundtrack also felt like not as much thought was put into it, there were some sections where the music was just missing which was either another bug or worse, that was intended. The ship is just something you buy and change very minimal things in, felt like an afterthought. Customization is minimal, resources are easy to get, and there is just no progression unlike in Caed Nua, a fortress which you see progress. Ship combat is a slog and I see no reason to just not instantly board anyone in your way. The ship is this game's Caed Nua, and it feels slimmed down and like not as much thought was put into this mechanic, or any of the mechanics surrounding the ship itself. Obsidian has a reputation of releasing games nowhere near ready, but I haven't seen a more apparent example of this than PoE2. And also after 1-2 hours of play the frames drop to a consistent 27 and less, with the only remedy being to restart the game. Bugs were rampant throughout the 77 hours of game time, the loading time was bonkers, starting up the game took at least 5 minutes every time. After so many years, it's unreal how rushed it still feels. Now onto the not so nice parts of the game. The actual companion quests all mostly lacked substance, either dragging on for way too long on too many islands or being over in half an hour. The companions were about as good as in the first game, the returning ones felt like the natural way to progress after each of their respective companion quests from the original, meanwhile the new companions all brought with them something new, new traits, new perspectives. Some feel unfinished with setting up of decisions and alternatives without ever delivering on them, but most of the side-quests were a joy to go through, with thought provoking decisions and a good bit of lore addition. That's where most of the meat of the game is at. The side-quests were all ranging from pretty good to excellent. The game also looks way nicer, but that's a given. The character classes also felt like they intertwined moreso than in the first game. Here though the difficulty is consistent throughout even without scaling on. I feel like overall the game was tougher throughout, in PoE1, the beginning was hard and almost frustrating but the mid and endgame were a cakewalk. Gameplay improved quite a lot from the first entry, everything feels smoother, there are a lot more skills that seem to matter and I saw myself pausing and thinking strategically way more than in the first game, where it was more of just click and the enemy will eventually die. After 77 hours though, I can confidently say that I am very disappointed in the experience.įirst of, the positives. With that and the knowledge that this game would take place in a **pirate** setting I was very much excited for playing Pillars of Eternity II. It was a straightforward game, with everything you'd expect out of something in this genre.
